저희 학교는 말하기,듣기, 읽기, 쓰기 네 가지 언어능력이 균형 있게 발달할 수 있도록 교과과정을 구성하고 있습니다. 기초, 초급, 중급, 고급 과정이 있으며, 각 단계별 학습 목표를 설정하고 성취하도록 지도하고 있습니다. 한국학교 한국어 수업 최종 목표는 일상적인 의사 소통 능력과 더불어  글을 체계적으로 쓰고 이해할 수 있는 능력을 기르는데 있습니다. 그러나 영어가 제 1언어인 대부분의 학생들이 토요일에 진행되는 한국학교에서의 수업만으로 한국어를 자연스럽고 완벽하게 익히는 것에는 분명 한계가 있습니다. 부모님께서 가정에서 일상언어로 우리말을 사용할 수 있도록 환경을 만들어 주시고 적극적으로 격려해 주시는 것이 효과적인 한국어 교육이 됩니다.
Our school follows the standard Korean language education curriculum that encompasses all four areas of language functions which are speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We offer instruction in Basic, Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced levels, and each level has its own academic goals for a consistent and rigorous progress in overall academic achievement. The ultimate objective of the Korean language classes is to develop basic Korean literacy skills well as daily communication skills. However, it is acknowledged that for most students with limited exposure to Korean language would progress more slowly than the peers with more exposure. If possible, it would be more effective to increase exposure to Korean language by creating an immersive Korean language environment at home.

우리 아이가 한국어를 전혀 하지 못하는데 괜찮을까요? Is it okay if my child doesn’t know Korean at all?

저희 학교에서는 다문화 가정 자녀와 우리말을 구사하지 못하는 학생들을 위해서  영어로  학습 내용을 가르치는 학급을 운영하고 있습니다. 일정 기간 후 수준이 오르면 일반 학급으로 진학하게 됩니다. 그리고 고학년 학생인 경우라도 한글 기초를 또래와 배울 수 있도록 최대한 학급을 연령별 수준별로 편성하고 있습니다.  또한 방학에 열리는 여름 캠프 기간에는 매일 오전에 한국어 수업이 진행됨으로 보다 단시간 내에 우리말을 익힐 수 있는 기회가 됩니다. 
While we try to place heavy emphasis on the Korean language immersion, we do offer classes that are instructed in English and Korean simultaneously. As students become more familiar and fluent in Korean, they will be moved to Korean-only classes. This approach is applied to the students in the higher grades as well as the lower grades to provide the learning environment with peers with similar age rather than just the language ability. Also, the summer vacation camp is a great opportunity for intensive Korean classes.

주말에도 학교를 가는 것에 불만이 있어요. I am not happy about going to school on weekends.

평일에 이어 주말에 아침 일찍 학교에 등교하는 것을 어린 자녀들이 힘들어 할 수도 있습니다.  그러나 한국학교에서는 딱딱하게 한국어를 주입식으로 배우는 공간이 아니라,  다양한 활동을 통하여 즐겁게 한국의 문화와 역사를 배워나가고 있습니다.  실제로  등교 시간에 힘겨워하던 아이들도 하교 시에는 오히려 집에 가는 것을 아쉬워 하곤 합니다. 주말 한국학교를 통해 학생들은 자신의 정체성을 찾아가고, 동질감 속에서 또래 친구들과 유대감을 쌓아나가며 정서적 공감대를 만들어 나갑니다. 훗날 우리 자녀들이 성장하여 되돌아보았을 때 이러한 시간들이 소중한 자산이 될 것입니다. 
Young children may have hard time going to school early in the morning on weekends as well. However, Korean school is not a place to learn Korean by cramming information; rather it is a place where students learn Korean language, history, and culture through various activities. Often times, we see students who enjoy it so much that have hard time leaving at the end of the day. Through Korean school, students discover their Korean identity, bond and create a lifelong friendship with fellow students. These experiences contribute as an invaluable asset to the students’ development.

한국어를 배우는 것이 왜 중요한가요? Why is learning Korean important?

최근 미국 사회에서는 본인의 계승어를 구사할 수 있는 것이 중요한 가치로 재인식되고 있습니다.  우리의 자녀들은 이미 한국어와 영어, 이중언어자로 성장할 수 있는 언어능력을 가지고 있습니다. 한국어를 배우는 것은  스스로의 자존감을 높이는 한국계 미국인으로서의 정체성을 형성하는 바탕이 될 것입니다. 
Recent studies attest to the benefits of speaking multiple languages, especially that of your heritage. This is especially true in current American society. Our children already have the great opportunity to be bilingual speakers of Korean and English. Learning Korean will provide the basis to establish their proud identity as Korean-Americans, as well as contribute to increased self-esteem.

부모가 한국어를 거의 못하는데 아이가 한국학교에 다니는 것이 불편하지 않을까요? Wouldn't it be difficult for students to attend Korean school if parents do not speak Korean?

저희 학교에는 다문화 가정 학생과 영어를 제 1언어로 사용하는 2세 부모님을녀 둔 자들이 많아지고 있습니다.  2세 부모님들이 한글 교육의 필요성을 느끼고  자녀들과 함께 한국학교에 참여하고 있습니다. 그러한 학생들이 많은 학급에서는 영어와 한글로 가정 통신문을 발송하는 등 학부모님과의 의사소통에 노력하고 있으며, 숙제와 학습 진도에 있어서도 불편함이 없도록 부모님과 학생들을 돕고 있습니다.
In our school, the number of students whose parent do not speak Korean has been growing. Second-generation parents who feel the lack of Korean skills themselves are actively learning and participating in Korean school alongside their children. We try our best in supporting the parents as well as students who are not fluent Korean speakers in school related communication.

반편성은 어떻게 이루어 지나요? How are classes organized?

매 가을 학기가 시작할 때 모든 학생이 반편성을 위하여 평가시험을 치릅니다. 저희 학교  재학생인 경우는  학기를 마칠 때에 담임 선생님을 중심으로 교사 회의를 거쳐 미리 다음 학기 분반을 합니다.  그레이스 무궁화 한국학교는 유아반 2반, 기초 과정 5반, 초급 과정 5반, 중급 과정 2반, 고급과정  1반으로 15개 학급을 운영하고 있습니다.  연령별 수준별 학급 구성이 가능합니다.
At the beginning of new school year (fall semester), all students take an evaluation test for class placement. For returning students from the previous school year, class placement is based on teacher recommendations and their academic progress. Grace Moogoonghwa Korean School offers 15 classes this year: 2 preschool classes, 5 Basic classes, 5 Beginner classes, 2 Intermediate classes, and 1 Advanced class. Class placement is based on age as well as their Korean language level.

한국어 능력 시험은 한국어를 모국어로 하지 않는 재외동포, 외국인의 한국어 학습 방향 제시 및 한국어 보급 확대를 위하여 1997년도부터 실시되고 있는 한국어 공인 인증 시험입니다. 이를 통하여 한국어 사용 능력을 측정, 평가하여 그 결과를 한국 내 대학 유학 및 취업 등에 활용하고 있습니다.
저희 학교에서도 학생들의 실력 확인과 향상 및 방향 설정을 위해 시카고 교육원을 통해 시험을 치르고 있습니다. 저희 학교는 개개인의 학업  수준별로TOPIK I(기존 1-2급)은 초급 3반부터 매년, TOPIK II(기존 3-6급) 는 중급 2반 이상 학생들이 격년으로 시험을 준비하고 응시하고 있습니다. 이를 계기로 학생들이 한국어에 대해 자신감을 갖게 되고 한단계 높은  배움의 목표를 세우도록 하고 있습니다.
The Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) Korean Language Proficiency Test is an official Korean language test for nonnative speakers of Korean.  The test was first administered in 1997 and is to certify Korean language abilities for language learners who seek university or employment opportunities in Korea. Each year, our students take TOPIK tests administered by the Chicago Korean Education Center, which provides an opportunity to verify student progress, identify areas for improvement, and adjust learning goals. Students in Beginner level 3 and above prepare for and take TOPIK I (levels 1-2) test annually, while students in Intermediate 2 and above prepare for and take TOPIK II (levels 3-6) biannually. As a result, students display steady growth and confidence in their Korean language ability.

SAT II Subject Korean은 미국 내 대학 입학 시험 중 하나인 SAT 시험의 한 과목으로 1995년 정식으로 한국어가 제2 외국어 시험으로 채택되었습니다. 저희 학교에서는 중급2반부터 교과과정에 포함하여 시험을 준비하고 있으며, 매년 3월 말 재미 한국학교 협의회 주최 모의고사에 응시하고 있습니다. 한국학교에서 배운 한국어가 미국 사회에서 정식 언어 능력으로 인정 받고, 대학 입학에도  영향을 미칠 수 있습니다.
SAT II Subject Korean is one of the SAT test subjects.  Korean was officially selected as a foreign language subject in 1995. Our school includes SAT II Subject Korean prep as part of curriculum for classes in Intermediate 2 and above. Students take the mock test at the end of every March, which is administered by National Association of Korean Schools. This a good example of how Korean language skills learned in Korean school can be recognized in American society and bring positive effects upon college applications.

저희 학교에서는 예수님을 모르는 가정의 자녀에게 장학금을 지원하고 있습니다. 장학금 신청서를 작성하셔서 교장 선생님과의 면담 후 지원 받으실 수 있습니다. 또한 가정 형편의 어려움으로 장학금을 신청하실 경우 상담 후 지원이 가능합니다. 필요한 가정에서는 문의 하시기 바랍니다.
Being affiliated with Grace Church, our school provides scholarships to children from families who are new to the Christian faith. You can fill out the scholarship application form and receive financial support after meeting with the principal. Need-based financial aid is also available. Please contact the school for additional information.

적은 양이라도 꾸준하게 한국어에 노출되는 것이 언어를 익히고 배우는 데에 중요합니다. 언어를 배우는 것에 지름길은 없습니다.
저희  학교에서는 학급문고를 운영하며 책읽기를 장려하고 있습니다. 일 주일에 한 권 한글로 된 책을 가정에 가져가서 읽고, 독후 활동지를 작성합니다.  지난 학기에도 70%이상의 아이들이 책읽기 상을 받았습니다. 또한 반마다 차이는 있지만, 일주일에 한 번 이상 일기 쓰기와 배운 것을 복습하기 위한 숙제가 주어집니다.
In order to create a Korean immersion home environment, our school operates a class library system and encourages regular Korean book reading. Last year, for example, 70% of the students received a Korean Book Reading award at the end the school year. Each class is managed differently by the homeroom teacher’s discretion, but in general, homework is for class work review, reading and writing practice, such as journal writing.  The usual frequency is minimum once a week.
