2019-2020학년도를 마치며 학부모님들께

지난 가을 부모님들과 함께 개학식을 하며 인사드렸던 것이 어느새 학년을 마치고 종강을 앞두게 되었습니다. 2020년도 봄학기는 예기치 않았던 COVID19로 인해 힘들었지만, 새로운 환경에 적응하고 시도를 했던 시간으로 오랫동안 기억에 남을 것 같습니다.

일리노이 주정부에서 Stay Home Order가 내려지던 3월 둘째주 에 교사들이 모두 모여 온라인 교실 환경을 구축하기 위해 서둘러 준비된 교육을 시행하던 날이 생각납니다. 그 뒤로 매 주 온라인 수업 이 조금씩 모습을 갖추게 되고, 함께 만들어 왔던 온라인 학습이 이제 5월 30일이면 10주에 달하고 예정된 종강을 맞습니다. 그 동안 선생님들이 준비하신 수업 자료와 전달사항에 맞추어 성실하게 따라와주신 학생들과 학부모님께 감사를 드립니다.

봄학기에 교내 말하기 대회 등 계획했던 여러 행사를 진행하지 못했던것들이 아쉬움으로 남습니다. 그럼에도 이번 학기에 중급 1반부터 새롭게 시도했던 ‘학급별 온 책 읽기’를 무사히 마쳤습니다. 영어가 모국어인 학생들이 제 2언어인 한국어로 쓰여진 아동소설을 처음부터 끝까지 읽어가는 것은 쉽지 않은 여정이었습니다. 그러나 매 주 조금씩 읽어나가면서, 책 속 등장인물들의 생각과 성격을 가늠해보고 문장마다 담겨 있는 속뜻을 찾아가며 책 속에 빠져들었던 경험은 학생들에게 오랫동안 기억에 남을 것입니다.

유아,입문,기초반 학생들에게 온라인 수업은 쉽지 않은 시도였습니다. 그럼에도 선생님들의 수업 준비에 맞추어 성실하게 따라온 학생들과 도움을 주신 학부모님께 감사를 드립니다.

매주 토요일이면 어김없이 저희 학교를 가득 채우던 학생들의 웃음소리와 활기찬 발걸음이 무척 그립습니다. 2020-2021년도가 시작되는 가을 학기에는 밝은 모습으로 우리 학생들을 다시 만날 수 있기를 기대합니다. 여름 방학 내내 건강하세요.

3. 2020-2021 가을 학기 등록은 7월 중순에 시작할 예정입니다.( 4월말로 종강하였던 유아,입문,기초반 학생들은 5월 등록금을 credit으로 드립니다)

I hope this letter finds you well. I cannot believe that our Grace Moogoonghwa Korean School Spring semester ends this Saturday.

As COVID-19 was an unpredictable challenge to face, I believe that this semester will be one that is especially memorable in our hearts.

When the Illinois stay-at-home order was first announced in early March, I remember our teachers gathered together to discuss how we should move forward in educating our students. Week by week, our teachers have been working hard at developing our online Korean school classes. We are proud to say that we chose to continue the semester over these past ten weeks and will officially end the year next week. To the students and parents who have been so flexible throughout these changes and have enthusiastically joined us in finishing the year, we thank you.

It is unfortunate that we were not able to host certain school events, such as our speech contest, this year. However, we are grateful that our intermediate and advanced classes were able to thoroughly complete their Korean chapter books. Writing a complete Korean chapter book as English-speakers is no easy task, and we are so proud of our students who have accomplished this feat.

We know that online class has also been challenging at times for our preschool, kindergarten, and beginner classes, and we thank the students and parents for their participation.

We dearly miss the laughter and joy of our students that filled our building every Saturday. We expectantly hope for our 2020-2021 fall semester to have a bright start. Here are a few announcements:

1. 2020 Summer Camp will be canceled for this year.

3. We are planning to hold registration for our 2020-2021 Fall semester in mid-July.
